Overview
Since 1909, federal Acts and regulations, such as the Food and Drugs Act, have governed the sale of self-care health products in Canada. By the 1960s, NDMAC became increasingly involved in the self-regulation of the industry. Since then, NDMAC has developed a number of voluntary codes and guidelines for the industry.
The Code of Marketing Practices covers product information/safety issues, environmental responsibility, media advertising and promotion, labelling, trademark equity, sales force representation, public relations, research, and complaint mechanisms.
NDMAC Voluntary Labelling Program for Significant Changes to Products provides guidance members can use to alert consumers to significant changes in self-care health products.
NDMAC Technical Research Paper for Improving Label Comprehension can be used by marketers as a means to improve self-care product labels to increase the overall comprehension by consumers.
NDMAC's Guidelines for Providing Poison Control Information outlines how members can provide poison information centres with more complete information on self-care health product formulations. NDMAC members are encouraged to ensure that information on new products and new formulations are provided to the POISINDEX® System and that current product listings are reviewed.
